If you are fond of landscapes of unspoiled nature and breathtaking sunsets, you can not miss a visit to Asfendiou, a group of small villages about 14 km away from Kos Town. If you are curious to know an unusual Greece, different from the mass tourist destinations, and o go deeper into natural and historical beauties of the past, take a day off from the seaside and organize an excursion to discover this wonderful place.

You can reach Asfendiou by bus or by car, starting from Kos Town and proceeding towards Zipari, and then taking a typical road full of curves that takes you to the hinterland of the island. Along the way, you will first meet the small village of Evangelistria and then a junction leading to the villages of Lagoudi and Amaniou on one side, and to Asomatos and to the mountain village of Zia on the other. If you love cycling and you want to see all that these beautiful villages hide, you can also decide to rent a bike and ride to discover the beauties and the landscapes that you will never forget.

Once you have arrived in the area of Asfendiou, just consider mandatory a visit to the Church of Asomaton Taxiarchon (XI century) and the ruins of the Paleochristian basilica of Agios Pavlos. At this point, take some time and stroll through the streets of Asomatos, a village that retains its traditional features, without having been almost touched by the mass tourism that characterizes the island of Kos: so enjoy the beautiful paved streets and the small stone houses, which tell the story of this small village of just twenty inhabitants.

But the most beautiful village of all is undoubtedly Zia, built on a hill and surrounded by a wonderful rural landscape. Hence you can enjoy a marvelous view over the island, which sweeps to the nearby Kalymnos and Pserimos: a sight that leaves breathless, especially at sunset. The village is typically Greek, with a central street on which there are small pottery shops and typical products shops, bars and taverns where you can stop to taste the real local cuisine.

If you are a tireless traveler, you can also consider the trekking route that leads from Zia to the top of Mount Dikeos, at an altitude of 846 meters, where you will find an absolutely unique view, probably among the most beautiful that the island of Kos can give. Are you still thinking about it?
