Guide of Kos island

Everything you want to know ...

The island of Kos, immersed in the Dodecanese archipelago together with the nearby Rhodes and Karpathos, is considered the second island of the area most affected by the tourist flow. Especially in recent years, Kos has in fact known an incredible success, due not only to its natural and historical beauties, but also to the lively nightlife that characterizes it throughout the summer. Just 4 km from the Turkish city of Bodrum, this island offers its visitors 112 km of coastline with beautiful beaches and crystal clear water, which make it one of the favorite destinations for tourists coming from all over the world. Kos is easily reachable either by plane or by boat, if you want to undertake a longer journey and maybe make some intermediate stops to discover the cities and locations of mainland Greece.

The most important city center of the island is its capital, Kos Town, a perfect mix of culture and tourist attractions of all kinds. Next to the characteristic whitewashed houses, the typical taverns and nightclubs of the now famous “bar street” stand out the splendid ruins of the ancient city. You can not miss the opportunity to walk among the remains of the Ancient Agora, visit the Archaeological Museum of the city or stop to admire the splendid “Plane Tree of Hippocrates”, to know and listen to the history of the island. But the most interesting archaeological site is located slightly outside of Kos Town, and is the well-known Asklepeion, a sanctuary dedicated to the god of medicine Asclepius, which preserves the remains of temples and sacred buildings. This place enjoys, among other things, a wonderful view of the Turkish coast, which gives it an absolutely unique and magical atmosphere.

The island offers you however a lot of characteristic places, that are absolutely worth visiting: picturesque fishing villages, pretty inland villages surrounded by lush and uncontaminated nature, beautiful mountain panoramas and seaside locations all devoted to fun. It is worth to include in your travel itinerary Antimachia, Kardamena, Pyli, Kefalos, the beautiful villages known as Asfendiou and the sunset seen from the town of Zia. Depending on the geographical location of your holiday destination, you can organize a trekking itinerary among the footpaths or decide to discover by bike the districts of the island that you have chosen with care and attention. If you want to move faster, you can rent a car or a scooter on the island, ideal especially if you have to travel along the coast in search of hidden beaches and coves where to dive.

The beaches of fine golden sand and the sea with the typical colours of the crystalline blue are in fact two other characteristics that make the island of Kos the ideal destination for your summer. The seaside locations are so many all perfectly equipped to accommodate visitors, providing them with umbrellas, deck chairs and sunbeds. What’s more, the beautiful beaches of the island are the favourite destination for tourists who love water and danger: they are all equipped for water sports such as water skiing, sailing, windsurfing and paragliding. Once you land here, how can you say no to these beautiful crystal clear waters? Start then from the nearest beaches to the city of Kos and head straight to Paradise Beach – the name says it all! – then move towards the beautiful Marmari and Mastichari (crowded but beautiful!) and then again towards Lambi and Limniosas. In this fun tour to discover the coast of the island of Kos, we recommend a stop in Bros Therma, perhaps the most characteristic and fascinating beach you will ever see. In fact, here you will find a wonderful thermal spring directly in the sea, a small natural pool where you can relax and enjoy the wonderful view that surrounds you.

There are also many traditional taverns that you will find in the various towns and seaside villages, where you can enjoy not only excellent fish dishes, but above all local cuisine. Taste absolutely the moussaka, the delicious aubergine pie that is expertly cooked throughout Greece and the dolmades, rolls of rice rolled up in vine leaves, a real local delicacy. All accompanied obviously by excellent locally produced wine.

To taste the local cuisine there will not miss traditional festivals and events in Kos, where to find typical products. The Wine and Honey Festivals are just some of the events scheduled for summer in Kos. These parties will involve you in the full island atmosphere with excellent courses, dances and traditional songs. There are also many cultural initiatives organized every year on the island, with art exhibitions, theatre performances and concerts of classical and contemporary music.

But the real fun in Kos is given by the locals of the island and by the collateral events that are organized annually and attract young tourists from all over the world. This year, jump into the wild excitement of Kos Summerstar, the electronic music festival that animates the city of Kos Town for five consecutive weeks. Every Wednesday evening, the Sirines club is enlivened by the music selections of the best DJs of the hour, for a swimsuit party where you can enjoy a drink and a dip in the pool. For lovers of this genre, many boat parties are also organized on the island: sail on a boat full of guests and DJs, for a night that you will not easily forget. Departing from Kardamena or Kos Town, your fun boats await you for the entire summer time!

If you are travelling with your family and want to enjoy a summer in total relaxation and serenity, you can opt for a fun boat trip, to discover the nearby islands or the most hidden coves where you can sunbathe and dive into water far from the destinations of mass tourism. Obviously will not miss the proposals for trips or excursions that will make you know the island to perfection, with special care to your children too.

Kos seems to be therefore a paradise island, that mixes the right doses of culture, entertainment and nature. And moreover in the right proportions, which will assure you not only an unforgettable summer, but will also leave you the desire to come back another time. And then a third one. And then again and again.
