The second largest tourist destination on the island, Kardamena is located 30 km southwest of Kos city and 5 km from the international airport. In the past it was only a fishing village that then turned into a town full of bars, night clubs and sandy beaches to relax. An unmissable stop for those who love fun in all its nuances. The town stands on the ruins of the ancient Alsarnia, today unearthed thanks to archaeological excavations, such as a shrine dedicated to the God Apollo and to Hercules, a marble temple dating back to the III century BC, a theater and some Roman ruins. Right in the summer the village of Kardamena comes alive with the festival of “Alsarnia” a series of cultural events, concerts, theater performances and traditional dances where fun and tradition merge. On August 29th the day is dedicated to Agios Ionnis while September 8th is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. There are many “taverns” that offer excellent dishes of traditional Greek cuisine and seafood.

Nightlife

If you have arrived on the island of Kos, you will already know that this village is famous especially for the summer nightlife, which attracts young travelers and older travelers every year with a proposal of discos and night clubs that seem to have no comparison on the island. Write down the names of Flamingos, Greg’s Place and Cheers Bar, and enjoy an evening full of fun!

Alternatives to the beach

But there are also other tourist attractions that, between culture and fun on the beach, will give you a summer that you can hardly forget. From the small port of the town you can actually embark on fun day trips. Choose if making a trip to the nearby Nisyros, where you can visit the still active volcano and then lose yourself in the village that seems designed, at the foot of the volcano or reaching boat the nearby Agia Irini famous for the therapeutic effects of its thermal waters. Other day trips will take you to the beautiful Paradise Beach, Bubble Beach, or half-day fishing trips on the islet of Agios Antonis and Giali.

In fact, the town has a very long beach, mostly sandy but dotted with cliffs, perfectly equipped for water sports such as water skiing, paragliding, windsurfing and many others.
